How to Disconnect as a Busy Parent | Unplug for your Kids

This post is sponsored by Jord. All content is my own.

It can be hard to know how to disconnect when you’re a busy parent with kids.

But, sometimes electronics can become too much. Even though we may need them in our lives, there is definitely a balance.

I’m a pretty lenient mom when it comes to electronics and screen time.

But, this week enough was enough.

Video games and screens were starting to take over our lives and I could see it right in front of my eyes.

How do you disconnect from technology?

As a work at home mom making a disconnect from technology is tough.

Technology is how I make my living at home typing on my phone and computer for hours per day.

The big hurdles for moms like me is how do I disconnect when my job literally requires me to use technology night and day.

…and how do I set an example to my kids when I’m always connected for work?

There are several ways you can set create a disconnect from technology while still maintaining your work and leaving time for down time.

Do I need to completely unplug from technology?

While this is a personal choice, no you don’t need to completely unplug from technology.

I love binge watching my favorite show as much as the next mom. My son can even talk me into picking up a controller to game with him every now and then.

How can I become unplugged?

  • Go out without distractionsLeave the house with your kids in tow and no phone.Believe it or not there was a time when moms raised their kiddos with no technology. They all turned out just fine.Phones can be huge distractors when we are out with our kids. So, take them to the zoo or park with no phone. Then you won’t be tempted to text or check your business email. It will force you to open your eyes and just focus on your kids. Setting the example for them that disconnecting can be fun and giving them an opportunity for true one on one bonding time.

Now I know what your thinking. How will I know what time it is? I have dance recital, soccer practice, and a scheduled appointment for work.

I really love having a regular watch for this. Jord makes the most beautiful wooden watches that fit all styles.

I’m so in love with the durability of their watches because it makes it easy to play with the kids and not worry about it wearing down.

The wood wristband makes these watches look so natural. They easily go with any outfit and stand out because of their unique design!

  • Have No Electronics Moments

Set some boundaries with yourself and your kids revolving electronics. Schedule out your priorities in a planner and set blocks of time each day where you won’t use electronics. Move towards a family goal of not using electronics during these time blocks. For example, you can have a no electronics during dinner rule. Dinner is a great opportunity to unplug and discuss the day with your family!
  • Set LimitsLimit yourself with your phone use. If you have to use your phone for work have a power hour where you set out to do all the important tasks on your phone until it dies. Then, have a block of disconnected time while it’s charging. You can even do this if you’re just watching shows or browsing social media. Once your phone is dead, give it up and disconnect.I’m always so surprised at how much work I get done whenever I take the time to disconnect myself from my phone.
