The most I or anyone wants for their newborn baby is for them to feel happy and healthy through the first 6 months and beyond.
I’m sure after 9 months of living safe and secure inside our tummies, protected from illness and loud noises, it’s scary for a new baby to come into this world.
With all three of my babies I have worried about them getting sick while they are a newborn.
I not only want them to have a healthy transition into their new world, but I also want them to feel happy and secure.
10 Ways to Make Your Newborn Feel Happy and Healthy
Even though having a newborn can be worrisome. There really are so many things we can do to protect their health early on and give them the same security they felt before they were born.
Talk to Them
One thing that remains the same after birth is your voice. Your newborn is born with a familiarity to you and your voice.
Spend time talking to your newborn during the day. Talk to them about what you’re doing, what the plans are for the day, and how much you love them.
At 4 weeks old my newborn loves looking up at me while I talk to him quietly. It makes him feel safe and happy. He’s even started cooing back at me.
Have Skin to Skin Time
I love the closeness that skin to skin brings with you and your infant.
Spending time with your baby skin to skin makes them feel warm and safe next to your body.
It’s such a great way to provide the same comfort they felt inside the womb.
Introduce Probiotics to their Diet
Did you know studies have shown that bad bacteria in your newborn’s gut can lead to autoimmune and metabolic issues like colic, eczema, allergies, diabetes, and obesity later in life?
Since the first 6 months are critical in the development of autoimmune and metabolic protection it’s really important to introduce a probiotic.
Evivo is a great choice for infant probiotics because it has been clinically proven to restore the good bacteria called B. infantis to baby’s gut.
It really helps their digestive system to develop more before they start solid foods and gives them more immunity protections as well.
The B. infantis bacteria in Evivo works with breast milk to give these protections and is so easy to start giving to your baby.
It comes in a daily kit complete with Evivo packets, a syringe, and small mixing bowl.
All you have to do is follow the instructions to mix your breast milk with the Evivo and feed your infant the probiotic with the syringe.
My baby loved this because it was his mommy’s milk. He seemed very intrigued about getting it from the syringe.
It didn’t hurt his tummy or have any side effects and I felt good knowing this good bacteria is being introduced to his diet.
Slow Introductions
Over the first 6 months try to slowly introduce your baby to new things.
We are slowly introducing our newest baby to the family dogs. They will be a part of his life, so we want to make the introduction slow and easy, so both the dogs and baby feel safe and comfortable.
Develop a Routine
Getting into a routine can help your newborn feel safe and secure knowing what to expect on a daily basis.
If they know their routine, they also know that their needs are going to be met each day.
Pay Attention to Their Cues
It’s important to observe your baby and get to know their cues.
Most babies have a way of telling you when they are hungry or need a diaper change.
If you know those cues it becomes easier to comfort them more quickly and get them what they need.
Sing Songs and Read Books
Even though your infant can’t sing or read along it’s never too early to start singing and reading to them.
This ties into hearing your voice. It makes your baby feel comforted to hear your voice while singing and reading.
It also helps them grow into a love of music and books if you read and sing to them through the newborn stage into childhood.
Always Wash Your Hands
Make sure you and other household members are washing their hands before coming into contact with the baby.
It’s one of the easiest preventative ways to make sure your baby isn’t catching any illnesses from family and friends.
Limit Visitors
During the first 6 months it is definitely okay to tell people no, that they cannot visit if they aren’t feeling well.
Isolating sick family members from your baby is preventing them from catching an illness that can end up being 10 times worse for them since they are so little and vulnerable.
Swaddling & Baby Wearing
Keeping your baby close to you swaddled in a blanket or in a baby carrier can make them feel secure and warm, like they were before they were born.
I’ve been carrying my newborn in a baby carrier when we go out and I love that feeling of him being so close to me. He usually falls right asleep against his momma, which shows me that he feels safe and loved.
