Don’t you love having children’s rain books to read on rainy days?

Reading is one of our favorite rainy day activities

On a cold rainy day my kids love cuddling up to hear stories about the rain. It helps to have some hot cocoa and a warm fire going too!

Even if it’s not raining it’s fun to have a collection of rain books handy for homeschooling or bedtime stories.

Check out our favorite children’s books about the rain and rainy days below.

Rainy Day Kids Books

Home in the rain by Graham, Bob – Francie and her mum, who is expecting a baby girl, are driving home from Grandma’s in the heavy rain. When they’re still far from home, they stop for a picnic. And as the car steams up, Francie presses her little finger on the window, spelling out “Daddy” and “Mummy” and leaving one space free, ready and waiting for the name of her soon-to-be sister…
Cloudette by Lichtenheld, Tom – Sometimes being small can have its advantages. If you’re a little cloud like Cloudette, people call you cute nicknames, and you can always find a good spot to watch the fireworks. But what about when you want to do something big, like help a giant garden grow, or make a brook babble?
Where does Kitty go in the rain? by Ziefert, Harriet – A lilting kitty mystery combines with rain-centered facts to create an utterly charming fiction/nonfiction picture book. As kids are invited on the search for Kitty, they’ll also discover what different animals do to enjoy, or avoid, a rainy day. Harriet Ziefert’s rhyming couplets pair beautifully with Brigette Barrager’s lush art to make a combination that is sure to please young readers and adults alike.
Worm weather by Taft, Jean – Join in the rainy-day fun, as kids splash through the puddles, affecting another weather enthusiast, a nearby worm. An imaginative and playful story, readers will love seeing the worm delight in the weather just as much as the kids.
Tap tap boom boom by Bluemle, Elizabeth – The clouds are gathering above a city street and soon — tap, tap, boom, boom! As a thunderstorm rolls in, people of all stripes race down to the subway to get away from the crackling rain and wind. With quirky wordplay and infectious rhymes, Elizabeth Bluemle crystallizes an unexpected moment of community, while G. Brian Karas’s warm illustrations show the smiles to be had when a storm brings strangers together as friends.
Rain, rain, go away! by Church, Caroline – RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY is already a well-loved preschool favorite. Now this board book with a full-foil cover will catch everyone’s eye (rain or shine!) as Church’s toddlers and stuffed animals are as adorable as ever in colorful rain gear.

Rain! by Ashman, Linda – One rainy day in the city, an eager little boy exclaims, “Rain!” Across town a grumpy man grumbles, “Rain.” In this endearing picture book, a rainy-day cityscape comes to life in vibrant, cut-paper-style artwork. The boy in his green frog hat splashes in puddles—“Hoppy, hoppy, hoppy!”—while the old man curses the “dang puddles.” Can the boy’s natural exuberance (and perhaps a cookie) cheer up the grouchy gentleman and turn the day around?

Singing in the Rain by Tim Hopgood – I’m singing in the rain, just singing in the rain, Oh, what a glorious feeling!
Spring calls in this classic Broadway number, brought to life in a beautiful picture book―perfect for sharing! Jump in puddles, raise umbrellas, and dance with joy through the pages of this visual story. With colorful, springy scenes and the familiar lyrics, this is a beautiful, gift-worthy, feel-good read-aloud.

The Little Raindrop Hardcover by Joanna Gray – From cloud to puddle, and puddle to stream, the Little Raindrop is making its way on the remarkable journey that is Earth’s water cycle. In this inviting story—illustrated with pastels for a soft, full color—readers are taught about science and nature through a character-driven narrative that leads a little raindrop on a big adventure. With an easy-to-follow plot that teaches precipitation, water flow, and evaporation, The Little Raindrop offers a sweet story full of learning and discovery.

Are you ready to play outside? by Willems, Mo. – In Are You Ready to Play Outside?, Piggie can’t wait to go play in the sunshine. But will a rainy day ruin all the fun?

Uni the Unicorn and the Dream Come True by Amy Krouse Rosenthal – The Land of Unicorns is in trouble — it has been raining and raining for what seems like forever. This is a big problem because there are only three ways that unicorns can get their magic: from the golden sun, from magnificent rainbows, and from the sparkle of believing.

Rain Makes Applesauce by Julian Scheer – This is a book of silly talk. It doesn’t pretend to be anything else. And yet it is an extraordinary creation, in which author and artist speak to children in a very special way. The fanciful nonsense and marvelously intricate pictures are full of sly subtleties and happy surprises for both eye and ear.

The Rain Came Down by David Shannon – Once upon a sunny day, the sky clouded over and the rain came down. The chickens squawked, the dog barked, the baby cried, the traffic snarled, the groceries fell, the people bickered and still, the rain came down.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett – If food dropped like rain from the sky, wouldn’t it be marvelous! Or would it? It could, after all, be messy. And you’d have no choice. What if you didn’t like what fell? Or what if too much came? Have you ever thought of what it might be like to be squashed flat by a pancake?
