How to Help Your Baby Have Safer Sleep | SIDS Prevention Resources

I partnered with Baby Box for this post, but all opinions are entirely my own.

Have you ever felt nervous about your newborn sleeping safely?

This is such a natural feeling as a new parent. Newborn babies are so fragile and helpless, especially right when you come home from the hospital.

With my first baby I was so nervous. I always had the feeling that I needed to wake up every 10 minutes just to check on my baby in his bassinet and make sure he was alright.

The risk of SIDS was always at the back of my mind and I wanted to make sure that he was safe as could be while sleeping.

How to Help Your Baby Have Safer Sleep

There are so many ways we can help ensure our babies sleep safely both at night and during nap time.

The more I’ve learned about safe sleep over the years the more confident I feel about leaving my newborn to sleep safely while I get some rest.

Being a new mom comes with sleep deprivation. So, becoming confident in your baby’s safe sleep is an important step in being able to relax and sleep because you know your baby is safe.

Free Resources for Baby’s Safe Sleep

A few years ago I heard about baby boxes being given to parents in Finland. Boxes are given to new parents along with education on safe sleep.

In Finland the baby box is a free resource for parents to have somewhere safe to put their baby down to sleep. Starting this program in Finland reduced infant death from SIDS to less than half of the U.S.

With a statistic like that I was so happy to learn about a company that is providing the same service to parents here in the U.S.

They are now available in the following states: CA, CO, TX, OH, NJ, IA, AL, MN, WI.  Baby Boxes are also available to all Canadian provinces except Quebec

The Baby Box Company

California parents can now take advantage of a free baby box program, like in Finland, through www.babyboxuniversity.comThey have partnered with the Baby Box Company to provide this wonderful service!

Not only does the Baby Box Company provide you with a free baby box and samples for you and baby, but they also provide valuable education about caring for your newborn and safe sleep.

How to Get Your Baby Box

Getting a baby box is so easy. Just follow the steps below!

  1. Sign-up for a free account at babyboxuniversity.com
  2. Click on find your course and select your location
  3. Take your video course (about 20 minutes) full of information about safe sleep and newborn care
  4. Take a short quiz
  5. A baby box with samples will be mailed to you or you can pick it up at a nearby location

Our Experience With The Baby Box

I just love the baby box and what a great resource it provides to new parents.

First, the Baby Box Company provided great information about baby sleep through their Baby Box University.

What I learned through the short video course increased my confidence in safe sleep. I also learned a few tips about caring for my baby during the newborn stage.

We received our baby box last week and it is so useful.

I love using it during the day to lay my baby in while I fold laundry or spend a few minutes of quality time with my 2 year old, who has been really jealous having a new baby in the house.

When I lay my baby in his box he always looks comfortable and secure. He can sleep laying on his back without any blankets and I can feel confident that he is safe.

  • The course was very helpful although to my surprise, there is not an option to have it sent to you. The closest location to me is an hour and a half away. I called to make sure and was told that they never deliver.

    • Hi Isa, So happy you found the course helpful! Unfortunately delivery isn't available free in all locations yet. If Baby Boxes aren’t available for free near you yet, you can always purchase one. Even if there isn’t an active free box program in your area and you buy a box, you can still access the educational content on Baby Box University for free. Keep checking back as the program is constantly expanding to new areas.

  • Thanks for the link! This was super helpful. I loved the useful information and that it's offered in so many places. I'm picking mine up in Canada! :)

    • Hi Ari! I am so happy to hear that you were able to get one. Isn't it great that they give you the option to pick up?
