Writing a letter to your baby is such a beautiful way to capture all those big feelings and precious moments that come with being a new parent.

Whether you’re expecting or already snuggling your little one, writing a handwritten note to your baby boy or girl is a wonderful way to start family traditions.

Get some cute free fall printable letters to baby below and tips for writing to your baby to be.

Why should I write letters for my baby?

There are so many reasons its a good idea to write your baby letters!

  1. First off, these letters are like little time capsules of love. They capture all those big feelings and precious moments that make being a mom so special. I remember when I started writing to my kiddos every month after they were born. At first, I thought I was just creating a super detailed history of our time together (and maybe justifying my stay-at-home mom status a bit!). But it turned into something so much more.
  2. These letters are a way to freeze time. They let you pour out your heart and share things you might not say out loud every day.
  3. Here’s the real magic – these letters become a bridge between you and your child as they grow up. They’re a window into your thoughts, your love, and even your struggles. They will read these when they are old enough to have kids and it will help them through the happy times and the struggles too.
  4. And you know what? These letters aren’t just for your baby. They’re for you too. Writing them helps you slow down and really appreciate all those little moments that make up this crazy, beautiful journey of pregnancy and motherhood. It’s like hitting pause on life for a bit and soaking it all in.

So, grab a pen (or your laptop) and start writing. Your future self and your grown-up baby will thank you for this precious gift of memories and love.

When should I start writing letters to my newborn?

You know what? There’s no perfect time – it’s whenever feels right for you!

Some moms, like me, start writing during pregnancy. I remember sitting down a few months before my second little one arrived, pen in hand, ready to pour my heart out to my firstborn. It was such a special moment, capturing those feelings before our family dynamic changed forever.

Others wait until after the birth, when they’re holding their newborn and feeling all those overwhelming emotions. Both ways are absolutely perfect!

If you’re pregnant, writing a letter can be a wonderful way to prepare mentally for birth and express your gratitude for this amazing journey. It’s okay if you get emotional – I certainly did! Just let those feelings flow onto the paper.

For those of you with your little ones already here, it’s never too late to start. You could write on their monthly birthdays, capturing their growth and your love as they change so quickly.

Remember, these letters are a gift – both for your baby and for you. They’re a chance to freeze time, to capture your thoughts and feelings in a way that daily life often doesn’t allow.

Oh, and before I forget – have you signed up for a free baby box or breast pump yet? If not, check out my article on free baby samples. It’s a lifesaver for new moms!

Saving Your Baby’s Keepsakes

You should save your letters to baby in their keepsake box so they have them to read when they get older.

First things first, grab yourself a storage container. I love the ones from Walmart that fit neatly under the bed or stack in a closet. They’re perfect for keeping things organized without taking up too much space. Remember, limiting storage space is actually a good thing – it helps you be selective about what you keep.

Now, what should you save? Here’s my go-to list:

  • Hospital bracelets and name cards
  • A few favorite outfits (including the going-home outfit)
  • First pair of shoes
  • Special blankets (like the one my mom crocheted)
  • Growth charts from check-ups
  • First stuffed animals
  • Birthday cards and cake decorations
