Breastfeeding is HARD.
Thankfully I’ve been able to pull it off with all 3 of my babies and overcome my breastfeeding problems. But, I have lots of friends and family members that couldn’t for one reason for another.
…and that’s okay because breastfeeding is HARD and not everyone is able to take that path for personal or even medical reasons.
Many breastfeeding hurdles can be overcome though. Here are some of the ways to overcome those problems.

Does breastfeeding hurt?
Yes! It definitely can hurt. If you are dealing with a breast infection, have a clogged milk duct, are just starting to toughen them up, or if your baby bites down on you with their new teeth.
Yikes, that just happened to me this week!
They can hurt, get swollen, change colors, be sore. But, there is a silver lining and a way to deal with these issues.
Breastfeeding Issues Solved
Have you ever felt like breaking up with breastfeeding?
I have too, you aren’t alone!
Mastitis (breast infection) was a recurring problem with my first baby. As a brand new mom it took A LOT of persistence to keep going.
I’ve also dealt with low milk supply and the inability to pump.
I somehow was able to breastfeed baby #1 for the first year, baby #2 for the first 2 years, and baby #3 is 7 months old and we are still going strong!
Here are some of the things that have kept me from giving up through 3 breast fed babies.
- Breastfeeding Support system (Lactation consultant, friend, mom group, family members)
- Knowing the situation is temporary
- Comfort– Keeping you and your baby comfortable while breastfeeding is half the battle. Make sure you have a cool room, comfy chair, nursing pillow, etc.
- Bravery– I used to be so scared to nurse in public, but with a nice nursing cover and family support I gained confidence and feel more empowered to feed on the go.
- Pumping (When it works it’s helpful to have a backup supply)
- Doctor’s Advice– Definitely if you are sick, think you have a breast infection, or nothing else is working ask your doctor.

Can I still breastfeed when my baby starts growing teeth?
Okay, this is a question I have gotten a lot! How do I breastfeed when my baby has four little teeth.
The answer is yes you can! Of course there is a chance you might get a little nip now and then, it’s nothing major!
This is a great topic to talk about with the Happy Mama Mentors resource I mentioned above!
Balancing Breastfeeding and Solids
Once your baby starts eating solids breastfeeding becomes a lot easier.
Remember when I said above that realizing it’s a temporary situation helped me tremendously.
That’s because when they start eating more solids you start getting a break.
Even if you do decide to breastfeed your babe for 2 years, it starts getting fewer and farther between feedings. So, you start getting a break and more relief!
We love stocking up on Happy Baby organics for solids because we can trust the simple ingredients and feel like our baby is getting a healthy supplement to his breastfeeding! They have really fun flavors that make it easy to transition into solids.
